Bed Bugs in Cincinnati
Last reviewed:
Cincinnati is built on hills, and much of its housing is older: brick buildings pressed up against their neighbors, large houses converted into several apartments, and multi-family buildings tucked into steep streets. Those features shape how bed bugs hide, how they spread, and what a good treatment plan looks like.
Older brick buildings
In older masonry buildings that share walls with the next one, the real paths for bed bugs are not the brick but the openings in it: around pipes, chimneys and flues, behind radiators, and through cracks in old plaster. Floors and ceilings in these buildings are often wood-framed, with many small voids between them. Together those mean a problem in one apartment can quickly involve the apartments above and below, so insist that the neighboring units are inspected, not just yours.
Converted houses and shared basements
A large house split into three or four apartments typically shares a front stair, a basement with laundry, and sometimes a back porch. Treat the basement like another unit. Ask whether laundry lines or storage lockers are shared, and keep your laundered items in sealed bags until you are ready to bring them back.
Hills and stairs affect the practical side of treatment too. On a steep lot with a long stair or no street parking at the door, moving bagged belongings out and back takes time and effort, so build that into your preparation plan and let the exterminator know about access difficulties.
What to do first
- Confirm the pest with a specimen and photographs.
- Notify your landlord in writing, and keep records of every contact.
- Do not set off foggers or spray along shared walls and radiators, which can push bugs into the neighboring apartments.
- Launder, dry on high heat, and encase the mattress and box spring.
What to ask a local exterminator
- Are you licensed in Ohio for pesticide application, and can you show proof?
- How will you handle voids, radiators and shared walls in an older brick building?
- Will you inspect the basement and neighboring apartments?
- What are the preparation steps given the stairs and access at my address?
Official resources
Ohio's landlord and tenant statute is Ohio Revised Code Chapter 5321, which covers a landlord's duty to keep premises fit and habitable. For housing code questions inside the city, the City of Cincinnati Buildings & Inspections department is the place to start. A legal aid office can explain how the law applies to your lease.
