Bed Bugs in Columbus
Last reviewed:
Columbus is a fast-growing city with a large university, big apartment complexes, and a steady flow of people moving in and out. For bed bugs, the theme is turnover. Every lease change, sublet and move-out is an opportunity for a bug to travel in a box, a couch or a mattress.
Apartment complexes and student rentals
Large complexes mean many units in a few buildings, often with breezeways, shared laundry and a single management company. Student-heavy areas near campus add short leases, shared houses with several roommates, and furniture that gets passed along or left on the curb at the end of the year. Each of those is a common way bugs enter a home.
If you live in a house shared by roommates, bed bugs in one bedroom is a problem for everyone. Agree early on who will contact the landlord, and treat all bedrooms at once rather than one at a time.
Moving in or out
- Before you sign a lease, ask the manager whether the unit or building has had bed bug treatment, and look at mattress seams and couch cushions in any furnished or previously used apartment.
- Do not accept free furniture, especially mattresses and upholstered chairs, without inspecting every seam.
- When you move out, launder what you can and wrap furniture, so you do not carry a problem to the next place.
- Avoid storing items in shared moving pods or storage units while you have an active problem.
If you find bed bugs
Save a specimen, take photos, and notify management in writing. In a big complex, the management company typically has an arrangement with a pest control vendor and will schedule inspection of adjacent units. Give the technicians full access, follow the preparation list exactly, and ask when the follow-up will be. If you are a student, check whether your school offers housing or tenant advising.
What to ask a local exterminator
- Are you licensed in Ohio for commercial pesticide application?
- In a complex or shared house, will you inspect all adjoining units or bedrooms?
- How quickly can you schedule follow-up visits around my class or work schedule?
- Who is billed: me, my landlord, or the other roommates?
Official resources
Ohio's landlord duties, including keeping rental premises fit and habitable, are in Ohio Revised Code Chapter 5321. Ohio has specific steps for tenants who want to hold a landlord to those duties, so speak with legal aid before withholding rent. For housing code complaints in the city, start with the City of Columbus website or its 311 service. This site cannot give legal advice.
