Bed Bugs in Detroit

Last reviewed:

Many Detroit residents live in detached single-family houses, with duplexes, flats and older apartment buildings making up much of the rest. That is different from dense Northeastern cities, and it changes both how bed bugs spread and who you need to talk to when you find them.

Houses: the problem travels with you

In a detached house, bed bugs usually arrive on something you carried in, such as used furniture, a mattress, a bag or a visitor's belongings, rather than through a shared wall. The upside is that a single-household infestation is easier to contain and treat. The downside is that you cannot blame a neighbor or expect a building owner to handle it: if you own the house, the job is yours; if you rent a single-family home, your landlord is the person to contact.

Because bugs in a house often spread from one bedroom to others by hitchhiking, how you move things matters more than anything. Do not carry bedding or furniture through the house without bagging it, and keep the infested room's items from being shuffled around.

Duplexes, flats and older apartment buildings

In a two-family flat or duplex, the unit next door or upstairs shares floors, ceilings and often a basement. Treatment should include the neighboring unit. In larger, older apartment buildings the issues look like those in other big cities: shared walls and pipes, laundry rooms, and hallways. Whoever owns the building, not the individual tenant, is generally best placed to arrange coordinated treatment.

If you find bed bugs

  • Collect a specimen and take photographs; confirm before spending on treatment.
  • If you rent, notify your landlord in writing and keep copies.
  • Wash and dry fabrics on high heat, seal them in clean bags, and use mattress and box spring encasements.
  • Be careful about free or curbside furniture, which is a common way bugs enter a home. Inspect any secondhand item before bringing it inside.
  • Avoid pesticide foggers, which scatter bugs and rarely solve the problem.

What to ask a local exterminator

  • Are you licensed in Michigan for structural pest control?
  • For a duplex or flat, will you inspect the neighboring unit?
  • Does your quote cover attics, basements and any detached garage or shed that holds furniture?
  • Which follow-up visits are included, and what happens if bugs come back?
