Bed Bugs in Indianapolis
Last reviewed:
Indianapolis is a spread-out, car-oriented city. Large parts of it are single-family neighborhoods, with apartment communities in many sizes scattered along major roads and around the edges. Two very different kinds of bed bug problem show up as a result: the household problem in a house, and the community problem in a big complex.
In a single-family home
Without shared walls, bugs usually arrive on a person, a bag, a used mattress or a piece of secondhand furniture. Travel is a common route, as are visits from family members and guests who stay overnight. Because the house is yours (or your landlord's, for a rental house), treatment is simpler to schedule and the whole structure can be addressed together. Pay attention to where else people sleep: a spare room, a basement couch and a child's bunk bed are all places to check.
Cars deserve a mention in a city where almost everyone drives. A bag set on a seat after a stay somewhere infested can leave bugs in the car. Heat-dry travel clothes and keep luggage in a sealed bag until you are sure.
In an apartment community
Many Indianapolis complexes are made up of several two- or three-story buildings around parking lots, with a leasing office on site. Bugs move between units that share walls and floors, and between buildings on belongings carried to shared laundry rooms. Report problems to the leasing office promptly and in writing, so that adjacent units can be inspected before the problem spreads further. Ask whether the community has a standing contract with a pest control company and what its notice and prep requirements are.
What to do first
- Confirm with a specimen and photos before paying for treatment.
- If you rent, tell the landlord or leasing office in writing and keep copies.
- Launder and heat-dry fabrics, store clean items in sealed bags, and encase the mattress and box spring.
- Don't rely on store-bought foggers; they commonly fail and can scatter the bugs.
What to ask a local exterminator
- Are you licensed in Indiana for pest control work?
- Will you inspect the vehicle I use if I suspect bugs are traveling with me?
- For an apartment, will you check neighboring units, and how is that arranged?
- What does the guarantee cover, and how many follow-up visits are included?
Official resources
Indiana landlord and tenant rules are set at the state level, and Indiana's official FAQ on landlord-tenant laws is a starting point for tenant and landlord questions. For local housing code concerns, check with the City of Indianapolis or Marion County health officials. A legal aid organization can answer questions about your specific lease.
