Bed Bugs in Las Vegas

Last reviewed:

Las Vegas has large apartment complexes, extended-stay housing and a huge flow of visitors through hotels and short-term rentals. Heavy travel is one of the main ways bed bugs move between homes, which makes the city a place where they can show up in any building type.

Your first week

  1. Identify the bug. A sealed bag with a specimen, plus photos of droppings along mattress seams, gives a professional something to confirm.
  2. Report it to whoever manages your building, in writing, and keep a copy. In a small building the owner may be close by; in a larger one, go through the management office.
  3. Contain your own belongings. Wash and dry bedding on high heat, and keep clean items in sealed bags away from the infested room.
  4. Tell the units next to yours if you have good relations with them, or ask the landlord to. Early notice limits the spread.

Apartment complexes and extended-stay housing

In large complexes, units are close together and share walls, ceilings and hallways, so bugs can move between households. Extended-stay and short-term housing has frequent turnover, which makes it harder to know where a problem began. Treatment is most effective when management coordinates the neighboring units.

If you live in a house or townhome, the problem is usually limited to your own household and belongings, and treatment is simpler.

Summer heat and travel

Las Vegas summers are extremely hot, but outdoor heat is not a safe way to kill bed bugs, and you should not leave belongings in a hot car or garage as a treatment. Heat treatment by a professional is controlled and measured. If you travel often, unpack on a hard surface and run clothes through a hot dryer when you get home.

What to ask a local exterminator

  • Are you licensed to do structural pest control in Nevada?
  • Do you treat neighboring units, and how do you handle a building with high turnover?
  • What is the written guarantee, and what do I need to do to keep it valid?
  • What preparation do you need from me, and can I get it in writing?

Official resources

For help with a rental, start with your city or county's housing or code enforcement office, and check your state's pest control licensing agency to confirm an exterminator's license. A local legal aid group can tell you what your lease and local rules say about pest problems. This site is not legal advice.
